What do we think about responsibility?

We are committed to complying with responsibility in all areas of our operations.
Part of responsibility is clear actions and part is principles, choices or learning. Everything is intertwined and complements each other. The background to all this is a genuine desire to influence the preservation of our environment suitable for future generations.

Carbon footprint and compensation

Calculating the carbon footprint of products and compensating them are clear actions. We want to do the calculations to learn how much and where emissions come from throughout the products lifecycle. In addition, we obtain data to compensate the climate impact. For that, we strive for a not only carbon-neutral but carbon-negative products throughout our product line. You can learn more on the carbon footprint and its compensation from the previous page.

Tradition

We respect Finnish traditions. Our ancestors used materials sparingly and the objects were made to last for generations. This was done in balance with nature. We cannot go back to that time, but we can take lessons from there and extract elements from there to our time. Scandinavian design has always been ecological. The materials have been used sparingly, the structures have been light and the shapes simple. Timelessness, longevity, and the use of wood have been features associated with the Nordic style. We are firmly committed to the values and qualities mentioned above. For our part, we want to continue and develop that great tradition.

Longevity

Longevity i.e., the long life cycle of a product, is responsibility at its finest. It is clear that it is ecologically better to use a long-lasting product than several less durable ones. We pursue a long life cycle of our products by many means. Sound design is one of the most important. Our goal is to make versatile and timeless objects that last time, visually and structurally. We also strive to make our furniture serviceable and parts replaceable. The best example is the removable upholstery of the sofa beds.

Optimal use of materials

All our products are easy to disassemble. The materials separable and recyclable. Discussions often focus solely on recycling. It is important, of course, but it is equally important to think about the whole life cycle of a product. In other words, recyclability alone is not enough if the product has a short life cycle and / or materials have not been used sparingly. We pay attention to the optimal use of materials in all products, minimizing waste and designing structures to be sensible and light. Our main material is wood, which has a lot of properties related to responsibility, more on that from here.

Responsible manufacturing

Responsible manufacturing involves analyzing processes and learning from them. Our carbon footprint calculation is an essential part of this learning process. Manufacturing always consumes energy. That is why it is important that nothing is produced unnecessarily. The products need to be needed and durable. The products are created in batches, where the work methods are optimized so that they consume as little energy as possible. In this way, the carbon footprint of one product remains smaller compared to if they were manufactured individually. Our network currently has several manufacturers in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. For each product, we consider which of our manufacturers has the most suitable equipment and know-how to manufacture that product. Our manufacturers mainly purchase raw materials for the products from European producers and wholesalers.

Transport

Transport always consumes energy and generates emissions. An essential factor in reducing these is how much products will fit in each shipment. The more products that can be transported at one time, the smaller the carbon footprint of one product is. We pay special attention to this from the very beginning of the design process. Our sleek design language makes our products lightweight, which is a good thing when transporting the products. Already in the first drafts, we think about how the products are packaged. It is essential for responsible transport that the products go in the most space-saving packaging possible. This happens already even in our sofa bed packages. In addition, the design must consider the dimensional standards of the transport industry so that the boxes can be optimized for transporting.

Design

Behind everything is responsible and sensible design, where the entire life cycle of the product is considered at the very beginning of the process. More about our design principles from here.

Commitment to development and learning

The world is changing constantly. New information, materials and manufacturing methods come up all the time and conditions may change rapidly. New tools and programs will be introduced to monitor and develop responsibility. Design is not an island. It should adapt to and provide solutions for the changes in the world. We promise to commit on developing our operations. We want to make the various aspects of our operations more and more responsible. We monitor the responsibility data of our products and make changes and actions quickly when situations require it. We keep our learning process continuous. In addition to our own responsibility, we also strive to make a difference at a general level. That includes increasing consumer awareness.
